Historically, Apple has had a relatively predictable release schedule for the new generations of iPhones, so fall 2016 is when users have pegged the first sightings of the iPhone 7 to occur. Another interesting phenomenon recognized by enthusiasts is that Apple tends to make structural body changes to the iPhone every other year (falling on even numbered years), which means 2016 may see a structurally re-vamped iPhone.
